The debate surrounding corporal punishment has provided an assortment of distinct thoughts and perspectives following news of Adrian Peterson’s child abuse case.
And this week the controversial topic is the centerpiece of the latest episode of Starz original series “Survivor’s Remorse.” During a charity event for an abused child, Cam Calloway’s mother (played by Tichina Arnold) credits beating him with an “orange Hot Wheels track” as a child for his success as a pro athlete, which causes a hailstorm of criticism from reporters and media pundits.
According to the show’s executive producer, Tom Werner, addressing such topics is one of the reasons why the show is relevant and relatable to viewers.
“I do find the anchor of this show very relatable, because it’s really about a family and the relationship of these two men at the center who are cousins…It has a strong foundation,” Werner recently admitted to the Huffington Post.
“And I feel, having made ‘The Cosby Show’ and ‘Roseanne,’ I feel that you can talk about issues and relevant things in a way that is compelling to the audience… The second episode that we've done is about the fact that the mother actually has whooped her son. But I think that is something that we deal with in, hopefully, a humorous fashion if it’s possible.”
“One of the most useful words that I can use to describe this series is, I think it’s authentic,” he added. “If you watch the show, I think you feel like you’re a fly on the wall, and these conversations feel very honest and authentic.”
