Cute Little Deer And Hunter Become BFFs, And It's Adorable

Wisconsin hunter Brian Powers’ outing took an unexpected turn when a little deer wearing a bright orange collar walked straight up to him.

Powers documented his encounter with the small animal in three short videos posted to YouTube. 

“This deer lives in the wild but is friendly toward humans and someone was smart enough to put the orange scarf around his neck to try to protect him,” Powers told local news station WFRV-TV.

During official deer hunting season, some states require hunters to wear bright orange attire, also known as blaze orange or hunter orange. Deer and other game animals cannot see the color because they don’t have red-sensitive cone cells in their eyes, according to New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation. That’s why hunters wear blaze orange and so other people can see them.

The Wisconsin deer’s orange collar was seemingly meant to communicate to other hunters not to shoot. 

“So did you go shopping at Macy’s and get that little collar?” Powers asks his new friend in the video above. “Must have been Saks, Black Friday sale. Nordstroms. You look like a Nordstroms guy.” 

Previously, Alabama’s Conservation Department put orange collars around white-tailed deer so hunters would not shoot them. In 2014, the department and Auburn University’s School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences were studying survival rates and movement patterns of white-tailed deer in the state, so collars were used to prevent hunters from killing animals that were part of the ongoing research project. 

It’s unclear if the deer in the video received its collar from a civilian or a state-run effort.
