Just when the Washington Nationals thought they had a walk-off hit, twice, the Cincinnati Reds' defense made a pair of game-saving catches to extend the game.
Washington had a baserunner on third in the 12th inning when catcher Wilson Ramos hit a line drive up the middle. It looked like the Nats were about to win, but Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips made a diving catch to end the inning. With a baserunner on third later in the 14th inning, Nationals infielder Anthony Rendon hit a sharp liner to right-center field. This time, Reds speedster Billy Hamilton chased it down and laid out for a diving catch to extend the game.
Hamilton's catch seemed to crush the spirit of injured Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez.
The amazing catches helped make the game last 4 hours, 58 minutes. After five scoreless extra innings, Cincinnati's Todd Frazier gave his team the lead with a two-run home run in the 15th inning. That was enough for the Reds to pull off a 4-3 win.
