The Contemporary Museum of Art Australia opens on Thursday, March 29 after an 18 month period of expansion. The $53 million redevelopment has transformed the space into an international beacon of creativity. Between this new museum and the upcoming Sydney Biennial, art lovers may well have to add the land down under to their list of art world hot spots.
The first exhibition to show in the revamped space will be "Marking Time", a multimedia collection of works that address the concept and representation of time. Through drawing, watercolour, sculpture, installation, sound and light, diverse artists represent time in its essence and in its evolution through history and technological developments. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be "The Clock" by Christian Marclay, a 24 hour video montage that won him Golden Lion at last year’s Venice Biennale.
About the theme of time, exhibition curator Rachel Kent told the Wall Street Journal: "It seemed so apt. It’s a really good opportunity to take a theme that is very open-ended, elastic, it affects all aspects of our lives, and to present the work of contemporary artists who are dealing with these ideas."
"Marking Time" will provide Australia a chance to show the world its contemporary art chops, skillfully combining well-known names with intrepid young up-and-comers. And to make sure they stay cutting edge, they are even providing naked tours of the museum next month.
The exhibition will feature work by Katie Paterson, Gulumbu Yunupingu, Edgar Arcenaux, Tatsuo Miyajima, Rivane Neuenschwender, Elisa Sighicelli and many more. It will run from March 29 to June 3 at MCA in Sydney.
