Since Adele burst onto the music scene with her stunningly beautiful voice and subsequent 6-Grammy sweep, it seems that everyone with any vocal talent at all has been recreating her songs. From Glee’s all-girl mash-up of "Rumour Has It" and "Someone Like You" -- if you haven’t seen it watch it now ... seriously ... right now -- to the busker singing "Someone Like You" at NYC’s 86th street subway station, there are have been some incredible renditions of the singer's hits. That means that at this point, it takes a lot to get us to stop, listen and take notice of yet another Adele cover. This video of four young women singing "Rumour Has It" a capella -- with kitchen utensils -- succeeded.
The women are members of the a capella group "The Dolls," which they started in 2008 at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. The members, Megan Wellman (23), AJ Luca (22), Ariel Kerber (24) and Mary Anne Cleary (26 tomorrow!), create all of their own arrangements and they practice in a small studio apartment (hence the video's domestic setting).
"I [got] the idea of doing Adele’s ‘Rumour Has It’ ... because I couldn’t stop listening to it in the car. I heard it and knew something would sound special about it with just female voices doing it!" Kerber, who sings the lead vocals in the video, said in an e-mail. And since the apartment where they practice has carpeted floors, stomping wouldn't work for the percussion, and The Dolls had to get creative. That's where the spoons, spatulas and cheese graters came in.
