After that unbelievable (and unavoidable) 2011 season in which Tim Tebow led the Denver Broncos to the Divisional Round of the playoffs, his peers around the league voted him as the 95th best player in the NFL. His stature and playing time have plummeted in 2012 after a much-hyped trade to the New York Jets. The run-first quarterback has participated in only a handful of offensive possessions per game and made his greatest impact on special teams. To the disappointment of his supporters, he has yet to supplant Mark Sanchez as the team's starting signal caller.
With his meager contributions no longer even remotely related to the mammoth amount of coverage he receives, NFL players have voted him the most overrated player in the league, according to a Sports Illustrated poll that included 180 players.
"Oh, really? No, I didn’t see it," Tebow told the New York Daily News. "Yeah, it’s really fine. It’s both sides, because they also voted me in the Top 100 (Players on NFL Network), too."
Doug Farrar of "Shutdown Corner" doesn't consider Tebow overrated when it comes to actual football, noting "most football people I talk to don't take him very seriously at all, at least as a traditional quarterback." Instead, Farrar writes that Tebow might be the most over-exposed NFL player.
Perhaps it's that exposure that led to Tebow's spot atop Sports Illustrated's poll. After all, the World Wide Leader even threw a birthday party for him, without him. Some of Tebow's most vocal fans expressed another theory on Twitter, that could be connected to the level attention paid the former Florida Gators star.
Those hoping for Tebow to eventually take over in New York should take note that Sanchez was a distant second (a spot he held last year) in the SI poll, tied with Cowboys QB Tony Romo. According to the poll, Tebow had 34 percent of the vote while no other player was even in double digits. Sanchez and Romo each drew 8% of the vote.
"I don't know how to comment on that," Jets coach Rex Ryan about the poll, via ESPNNewYork. "I just know I'm happy they're on my football team -- on our football team. Seems like the Jets always get something, you know?"
