Entre las 27 víctimas de la masacre que tuvo lugar en la escuela primaria Sandy Hook de Connecticut se encontraba la niña Ana Grace Márquez, de 6 años.
Márquez es nieta de la hermana de Jorge Márquez, alcalde de Maunabo, un pueblo ubicado en la zona sureste de Puerto Rico. Márquez dijo al diario puertorriqueño El Nuevo Día que la niña "apenas cumplía siete años ahora".
El alcalde también dijo:
"Estamos aquí con la abuela. Ella está bien afectada. Es algo bien lamentable. Nuestra familia es bien unida y pasamos todo el día esperando noticias. Esperábamos que quizás estuviese herida, pero ya los padres nos avisaron. Ya no hay marcha atrás".
Primera Hora, otro periódico de la isla, menciona que según el alcalde, en la escuela estudiaba también el hermanito de Ana Grace, pero que se encontraba en otro salón.
Márquez se enteró de la noticia inicialmente por CNN, y al preguntársele si pensó que entre las víctimas podía haber un puertorriqueño éste contestó a Primera Hora: "Esto siempre nos toca a todos de cerca. Estamos tan esparcidos en la diáspora de Estados Unidos que siempre nos toca a algún puertorriqueño".
