Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) defeated Democrat Shenna Bellows in the state's Senate contest Tuesday, Fox News and NBC News report.
Collins, who was first elected to the Senate in 1996, consistently led Bellows in polling throughout the course of the race.
Bellows, a former head of the ACLU of Maine, campaigned on her record advocating for civil liberties. Over the course of her re-election campaign, Collins bolstered her independent support by coming out in support of marriage equality and claiming it was too late for Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
