Usain Bolt es un atleta nacido en una pequeña localidad de la parroquia de Trelawny, Jamaica, de extracción humilde. Desde niño comenzó a exhibir sus habilidades en las carreras de velocidad, pero fue hasta los 15 años que tuvo la oportunidad de mostrar sus atributos ante la mirada internacional en el Campeonato Mundial Junior de Atletismo, llevado a cabo en su país, en el que se convirtió en el campeón júnior del mundo más joven de la historia en 200 metros.

Este fue el inicio de una carrera plagada de éxitos para el corredor caribeño, que gracias a su velocidad, a su 1.96 m de estatura y a su gran zancada hoy día es el atleta más rápido del mundo, al poseer las marcas mundiales de los 100 (9.58) y 200 (19.19) metros planos, luego de haberlos obtenido en el XII Campeonato Mundial de Atletismo en Berlín, Alemania, de 2009, y el récord mundial de 4x100 ((37.04), junto a Nesta Carter, Michael Frater y Yohan Blake, en Daegu, Coreal del Sur, en 2011.

El espigado velocista buscará revalidar su poderío sobre la pista en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres, que será su tercera justa de este tipo, luego de haber participado de manera brillante en los de Beijing 2008, al haber ganado tres oros en 100m, 200m y 4x100, y no tanto en los de Atenas 2004, ya que una lesión en la pierna le impidió sobresalir como él hubiera querido.

Además de las marcas conseguidas por el atleta jamaiquino y sus múltiples medallas de oro y plata por todo el mundo tanto en campeonatos del mundo como en Juegos Olímpicos, la IAAF (Asociación Internacional de Federaciones de Atletismo) y la revista Track and Field lo distinguieron como el 'Atleta del Año' en 2008 y 2009; y la BBC como el 'Personaje del Año en los Deportes' en 2008 y 2009, entre otros.

A pesar de su corta edad (25 años), Bolt sabe que estos podrían ser sus últimos Juegos Olímpicos. "Este es el último capítulo de mi carrera como atleta y espero que vaya tal y como espero. Estoy entrenando tan fuerte como puedo para estar seguro de que todo va bien", señaló a la agencia EFE.

"La gente espera verme correr los 100 metros en 9.4 segundos y los 200 en 19 segundos"
