Fantasy Football Adds: Chris Givens, Mario Manningham Among Week 14 Waiver Wire Pickups

Week 14 Waiver Wire Fantasy Pickups

This is a big weekend for fantasy football managers, as the playoffs commence in the majority of leagues. When it comes to the headlines that matter in fantasy sports, there is less interest in soap operas such as the Jets trying to pick from three mediocre quarterbacks to start this weekend. All fantasy managers want to know is which players can still make an impact from the waiver wire.

The answer from last week was Eagles running back Bryce Brown. For a second consecutive week his fumblitis cost the Eagles in reality, but fantasy managers were thrilled with his statistics in fantasy.

Other top performers were Raiders tight end Brandon Myers, Russell Wilson, and Donnie Avery. Aside from the big performance, another thing these players had in common is that they were at one point featured in this series on players available in the majority of fantasy leagues.

This week’s group of waiver wire pickups includes a Rams wide out evolving as the team’s top deep threat, a 49ers wide out meshing with Colin Kapaernick, a backup running back outperforming the team’s starter, a Browns wide receiver who is actually healthy and productive, and finally a big running back who is making the most out of an opportunity to start.

Fantasy Waiver Wire Week 14
Chris Givens, WR - St. Louis Rams(01 of05)

He’s dealt with injuries and even a suspension this season, but when he is on the field there is no question about Chris Givens’ talent. Against a stellar 49ers defense, Givens hauled in 11 receptions for 92 yards. It was a second straight big performance after making six grabs for 115 yards and a touchdown against a very good Cardinals secondary in the previous week. With 559 Yards in just 11 contests this season, Givens is a prime sleeper coming into next season. The rookie out of Wake Forest has been a pleasant surprise for the Rams this season. Mario Manningham, WR - San Francisco 49ers(02 of05)

Mario Manningham has been mostly ignored after his heroics with the Giants in the Super Bowl last season. There were questions as to where the former Michigan star would fit in with the 49ers with Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis embedded as the team’s top targets. However, since Colin Kaepernick has emerged as the starting quarterback, Manningham has been revitalized. He picked up five receptions for 37 yards against the Rams after racking up at least 45 yards in the previous two games. Manningham already has more receptions than he totaled all of last season. Joique Bell, RB - Detroit Lions(03 of05)

The Lions have resorted to Mikel Leshoure as its starting running back with Jahvid Best out for the season, but the team’s backup Joique Bell may force a change in the depth chart before this season is over. Fresh off a big performance with 81 yards on seven rushes and 21 yards on three receptions, Bell reminded the Lions that he has been the most efficient running back on the team this season. Bell is averaging 5.7 yards per carry and now has 658 total yards, and with Leshoure mustering just 3.8 yards per carry, there are honest questions as to who should be the featured back in Detroit. Josh Gordon, WR - Cleveland Browns(04 of05)

Still available in more than two thirds of fantasy football leagues, Josh Gordon is shining bright recently with three consecutive games of 50-plus yards. Most recently, Gordon exploded for 116 yards against the Raiders with six catches. The second round pick out of Baylor is enjoying a fine season with 34 receptions for 646 yards with four touchdowns. Gordon is starting to see a greater frequency of passes come his way after being relegated to only deep routes through the first half of the season. (credit:AP)
Jonathan Dwyer, RB - Pittsburgh Steelers(05 of05)

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has already come out to announce that Jonathan Dwyer will get another start this weekend. This comes after a less than stellar performance that includes just 49 yards on 16 rushes and three receptions for eight yards against the Ravens last week. As disappointing as those numbers are, fantasy managers have to keep in mind that it came against an elite Baltimore defense. Dwyer now boasts 478 rushing yards on the season at a solid 4.2 yards per carry ratio. Just 23 years old, the former sixth round pick out of Georgia Tech could still end up as the Steelers starting running back of the future. (credit:Getty Images)
