Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon doesn't seem to be enjoying Derek Jeter's farewell tour. The New York Yankees' longtime Captain, who is retiring at the end of the season, was cheered at Tropicana Field throughout a three-game series over the weekend.
That didn't sit well with Maddon.
"Yeah it's great. It's great that it's sold out. And I understand that the people like Derek Jeter. But you've got to come out and root for the Rays, too, you understand," Maddon said on Sunday after a 3-2 loss, via NJ.com. "I mean, I totally understand what's going on. But I'm not going to sit here and defend all of that noise in the Yankees' favor in our ballpark. I'm not going to defend that. So we're going to come out and root for the Rays. We'd appreciate that."
Maddon wasn't the only one who noticed the Jeter love at the Trop. After the game on Saturday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he hasn't seen an away stadium cheer for Jeter as much as the fans did at Tropicana Field.
Unfortunately for Maddon, the Rays will host the Yankees for one more series in September. It will be Jeter's final series at the Trop and will likely draw plenty of Yankees fans. Maddon will likely have to sit through a retirement gift presentation for Jeter too.
