Biden Dedicates National Guard Building To Late Son, One Year After His Death

Beau Biden joined the National Guard in 2003 and served in Iraq.

Vice President Joe Biden paid tribute to his son Beau on Memorial Day -- the first anniversary of his death. Beau Biden died of brain cancer at the age of 46.

Biden honored his late son by unveiling the new name for the Delaware National Guard headquarters: the Major Joseph R. "Beau" Biden III National Guard/ Reserve Center. Beau enlisted in the National Guard in 2003 and served in Iraq in 2008, according to The Associated Press.

The vice president remembered his son as a loyal, selfless person who "devoted his whole life to his family and to other people."

He also thanked his residents of Delaware, where he served as a U.S. senator for 36 years, for the outpouring of love and support he felt following Beau's death.

"It matters," he said. "It gives strength and sustenance in ways you can’t describe."
