A geology professor stood before her class and poured a pile of rocks and stones into a large cylinder. She asked the students if the jar was full, and they all agreed that it was. The professor smiled slyly, then poured a bag of smaller pebbles into the cylinder, which settled neatly into the open areas between the stones. She again asked the students if the cylinder was full, and they agreed, yes, now it was. Next, the professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the cylinder. When she asked the students if it was full, they said, yes, at last it was. Finally, she opened a bottle of beer, poured it into the cylinder and watched it fill the glass to the brim. “So,” she asked the class, “what lesson did we learn from this?” From the back of the room, a student answered, “There’s always room for beer!”
