Hoping to bolster the spirits of this political base and make a late-stage to working voters, President Barack Obama will address a major gathering of union workers in Wisconsin on Labor Day.
The president will be speaking before a picnic organized by the AFL-CIO in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the White House confirmed. He will be joined at the event by the union federation's president Richard Trumka.
This will be the second appearance the president has made before the AFL-CIO in as many months. Earlier in the year, Obama addressed the union group's executive council, appealing to the members for their help and commitment as the election approached.
Last year, Obama made a similar appearance with Trumka at an AFL-CIO picnic in Ohio -- in that case, with hopes of getting health care reform passed into law. Since then, however, friction has developed between the administration and the labor community based predominantly on the belief from the latter that the former hasn't pushed hard enough on the jobs-creation front. Unions are planning to spend tens of millions of dollars during the 2010 election cycle. But there is growing concern within Democratic circles that their members won't be motivated to come to the polls in November.
