VaLinda Hathcox, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representative from Texas, says that she has family roots in her district going back to the 1800s. According to the Wall Street Journal, she is a former Deputy Attorney General and was the first woman to be elected prosecutor in Hopkins County.
In anticipation of the November 6 congressional elections, HuffPost Women talked to her about who she is, why she's running and how to get involved with her campaign.
What's your favorite quality in another person?
Sincere honesty.
What three words best describe you?
The energizer bunny.
What's your biggest flaw?
Procrastination/perfectionist.
What failure are you most grateful for?
Divorce.
If you weren't you, who would you be?
My grandmother.
If you could live anywhere, where would that be?
Here in Texas, visit but return home.
What woman do you most look up to?
My mother and Eleanor Roosevelt.
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Persistence and preparation make luck.
What's your joy trigger?
Shredding pastures on my tractor.
What is your favorite book?
Time warp – "East of Eden" and "Gone with the Wind"; "Chronological Bible"
What is your favorite album?
Anything Willie Nelson and James Taylor.
Where did you have the best meal of your life?
At home.
What is your favorite thing you've ever worn and why?
Strand of gold beads crocheted in 1918 -- the year my father was born -- by a great aunt. She gave them to me, because I played with it as a child. She said that they would be “in” fashion about every 7 years as a flapper necklace, a belt, etc. She was correct. Unfortunately, it was stolen, when my home was burglarized.
What talent do you wish you had?
To play by ear and to sing well.
What quality or accomplishment do you want people to know you for?
My helping of others.
What makes you feel the most free?
Shredding pastures riding on my tractor.
Why are you running?
I was unable to have children, so I can give my talents to helping all children and families. The incumbent Congressman Ralph Hall chairs the Science and Technology Committee on which Todd Aiken serves. Mr. Hall states that on December 10, he will have served in the U.S. House longer than any other member in history.
What is the most important issue for women in this election?
Not to re-fight the old battles; keeping the government out of our bodies.
How can readers get involved in your campaign?
After redistricting, Texas District 4 includes all of 16 counties in Northeast Texas and portions of two more: Bowie, Camp, Cass, Collin (part), Delta, Fannin, Franklin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Lamar, Marion, Morris, Rains, Red River, Rockwall, Titus, Upshur (part). It was aligned more Republican than it was previously. Encourage everyone they know in Texas to vote for me. If you are in a position to express opinions, compare with with the incumbent and spread the word.
