Corpus Christi Hooks left fielder Austin Wates may still be toiling in the minors but he has flashed the potential to produce a major league highlight.
A third-round pick of the Houston Astros in the 2010 draft, Wates grabbed the spotlight with an unbelievable leaping snag as he tumbled over the left-center-field wall to rob an opponent of a home run during a recent game. Adding to the degree of difficulty, Wates collided with teammate Brandon Barnes as he went all out for the ball. The pair went headfirst into the bullpen yet Wates, amazingly, came up with the ball clasped in his glove. As Wates jumped up, he raised his arm to display the ball to a stunned San Antonio crowd.
Although the memorable play may have kept a few runs off the board, Corpus Christi suffered a 6-0 loss to the San Antonio Missions.
