Here are our top picks and notable mentions for 2011.

Best Ships

The biggest cruise ships ever, by far, Royal Caribbean's 282-ton, 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas transcend their enormity through a layout that bunches experiences in "neighborhoods" around the vessel, allowing many of the ships' restaurants and entertainment spaces to be surprisingly intimate.

Best Ships

Introduced in 2008, 2009, and 2010, the 122,00-ton 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice, Equinox, and Eclipse are the most flagrantly beautiful mega-ships ever built. Outside, their form is both massive and sleek, while inside a unifying high-end aesthetic ties the many moods and experiences of their public rooms into a satisfying whole.

Best Ships

Though she's not the spring chicken she was on her debut in 2004, the 151,400-ton, 2,592-passenger Queen Mary 2 still sits squarely in her very own, personal niche in the cruise world, being the only true, super-tough ocean liner at sea.

Notable Ships

NCL's newest ship, the giant, 153,000-ton, 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic, has enough quirky little problems that it doesn't make Frommer's five-star list, but she does still offer the fun, unconventional NCL experience I like.
