My father spoke fluent Burmese as he had been stationed there in the Foreign Service in the 1950s. He went literally everywhere in Asia in those years, but his heart was always with Burma and their beautiful people.

It has been a country of remarkable riches and for the past decades, remarkable horror. A cynic would say it's too bad that Burma doesn't have oil fields like Iraq because then maybe we would have overthrown the military dictators there, men who make Saddam look like an amateur.

Yesterday, the US CAMPAIGN FOR BURMA released a video with Jim Carrey, and good for him for doing it. It is about one of the most tragic heroines of our time, a female Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi.
