WHAT IS IT?
You actually got a bargain on this hand-painted ceramic bust, likely produced in Europe in the late 19th or early 20th century. The woman's portrait collar, elaborate brooch, and curled updo all recall Elizabethan style. During the Victorian period, families commissioned artists to craft such portrait busts, then displayed the likenesses as signs of wealth and education. Although the artist who designed your 22-inch-tall example signed the work on the back, a thick finishing glaze has rendered the signature illegible. But even without a definite known origin, this parlor fixture's beauty, size, and considerable age secure a becoming estimate.
