One of my favorite pieces of kitchen equipment is my home meat slicer -- not quite as big as a restaurant/deli slicer, but big enough to get the job done.
Once you have one of these, you never have to think hard again about the proper way to kick off a dinner party -- especially if the dinner is Italian or Mediterranean.
The week of the party -- not even necessarily the day of the party -- you go to a good Italian deli, buy a few hunks of good salumi (a category that includes salami, prosciutto, mortadella and more), and keep them in the fridge until the party starts. Then, along with glasses of foamy wine, you start slicing and serving, from the slicer to the platter, and into the mouths of your guests. It is not only delicious... it is positively celebratory! And, not to mention, extremely easy.
