Joe Arpaio, known as "Sheriff Joe" for his strong anti-immigration policies, announced on Monday that he would not run for governor of Arizona.

"I don't want to be egotistical," the Maricopa County Sheriff said in an interview on CNN, "but I could be governor if I ran. My polls are very high. I got the money. I got the polls. I got the support."

Arpaio is one of the leading advocates for the Arizona immigration law, which sparked a national debate about immigration, race and racial profiling.
