NHL Chooses Las Vegas For Expansion Team: Report

However, the earliest any Sin City team could join the league would be the 2017-2018 campaign.

The National Hockey League has settled on Las Vegas as its choice for an expansion team, according to a report by the Associated Press on Tuesday.

According to the report, which sourced two people who spoke on condition of anonymity, bringing a team to Las Vegas was a "done deal" provided organizers come up with a $500 million fee.

When asked by Reuters to comment on the news of expansion, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in an email that the league has no comment and are not confirming the report.

The NHL's Board of Governors will meet on June 22 in Las Vegas ahead of its annual awards ceremony where a decision on expansion could be finalized.

Las Vegas and Quebec City were the two cities who submitted official applications for expansion when the NHL, which has 30 teams across Canada and the United States, opened its formal expansion process last year.

The Las Vegas bid, led by Bill Foley, has reportedly secured over 13,000 season-ticket deposits for a potential team, according to the Associated Press report.

The NHL has previously said it received numerous expressions of interest about joining the NHL over the past several years from potential markets and ownership groups.

The earliest any expansion team could join the NHL would be the 2017-18 season.
