It takes a lot of courage and dedication to go back to college as a single mom, but as one recent college graduate learned, going through school with family beside you can make all the difference.
Tammy Rose, who graduated from Hodges University in Fort Meyers, Fla. on June 9, shared a special bond with one of her graduating peers, Ashley Polk. Polk is Rose's daughter and the two women not only graduated together, they both earned the same degrees -- an associate degree in science for computer information technology -- and graduated Summa Cum Laude.
Rose, a single mom with three daughters, went back to college after working as a hair dresser for 20 years because she decided she wanted a "lifelong career." Rose told Fort Meyers' Fox 4 News that she and Polk were able to help each other through the process of getting their degrees.
"Comparing notes, you know her strengths were my weaknesses and my strengths were her weaknesses," she said. "So we kinda fit together like a puzzle."
Polk said that sharing her college experience with her mom was a worthwhile experience for both women.
"Knowing she had my back the whole way was so great," she said.
