During the game, they're in scuffed-up cleats and smeared eye-black, hawking spit gobs into the dugout dust. But off the field, where they're expected to squire actresses, swimsuit models, Playboy centerfolds, and pop superstars to candlelit dinners, baseball's biggest stars have gotta step it up. Most don't (cf. Ed Hardy). But these 10 guys do, with three-piece suits, tuxedos, ascots (!), and fitted leather jackets--so our panel of jurists for the International Best-Dressed List duly ranks their civvie polish. (Did we leave someone off? Let us know in the comments, or tweet us your suggestions with @VFBestDressed.)

10 Best-Dressed Baseball Players
ROBINSON CANÓ(01 of10)

Anyone with Best-Dressed List honoree Jay-Z as his agent—the mogul just signed Canó as the first-ever athlete repped by his new Roc Nation Sports—has gotta be stylish. And though Canó has made a style signature out of sleek suits, his chain necklace, and a teeny bit of charming stubble, we’re partial to his leggiest look: when the ’05 Yankee vets made the then rookie dress as a cheerleader.
DEREK JETER(02 of10)

Spotted around Manhattan with 22-year-old Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Hannah Davis, Jeter looks the picture of summer-y vitality in a linen sports coat and starched white shirt, casually thrown open at the collar.
EVAN LONGORIA(03 of10)

One of baseball’s most fearless when it comes to fashion, the Tampa Bay Rays third baseman has been photographed in man-scarves, buttonless plackets, and ascots, as seen here at the espy Awards. He continues the Thurston Howell III theme with cream linen pants, sockless loafers, and a braided belt.
ALEX RODRIGUEZ(04 of10)

When you’ve got money in the bank—to the tune of $29 million this year, or more than the entire roster of the Houston Astros—you’d better look good. Rodriguez, duly, has impeccable off-field style, from his perfectly tailored suits to his signature shades: classic, black-out aviators.
MATT KEMP(05 of10)

The smiley Dodgers outfielder is so snazzy that he dated style-setter Rihanna for a year and has recently been spotted with her again at events around Los Angeles. Known to favor three-piece gray suits, spread collars, and big ties, Kemp is here on a red carpet looking exceptionally tailored, with the perfect pant break, tie bar, and crisp pocket square.
DAVID ORTIZ(06 of10)

Ay, (Big) Papi! The Boston Red Sox’s signature red and black make a spirited appearance on Sox D.H. and first baseman Ortiz’s shirt collar, which he wears under a black pullover with a silver bracelet. In addition to wild colors, prints, and accessories, Ortiz is never without edgy facial hair, and his frequently sported goatee sometimes features a hairline up to his lower lip.
JOHNNY DAMON(07 of10)

Baseball’s bad boy—the one who wrote an entire book about his general dumbassery—has moved past the mohawk and the Jesus coiffure while still retaining a rebellious edge. He’s here in a leather bomber jacket, gray polo, and just a hint of scruff where his scraggly beard once lived. The fetching blonde to his left is second wife Michelle Mangan.
DAVID WRIGHT(08 of10)
Open Image Modal
The square-jawed heartthrob and Mets third baseman has the all-American good looks and stylings of a 1950s quarterback—not a point guard, as he’s seen here struggling to handle the ball with the Harlem Globetrotters. His casual approach has paid off: in the off-season, Wright became engaged to longtime girlfriend and model Molly Beers. Sad news for the apparent hoards who flock to Citifield in “Future Mrs. David Wright” shirts.
CURTIS GRANDERSON(09 of10)
Open Image Modal
The Yankees’ centerfielder loves pinstriped suits (consistency!) and vests and makes a parade appearance ahead of the 2012 All-Star Game in a warm-weather getup: pink shirt, orange tie, and shades.
MIKE TROUT(10 of10)

Twenty-one-year-old phenom Mike Trout might be bicoastal—he hails from New Jersey and plays center field in Los Angeles, where he is the youngest player ever to make an Opening Day roster for the Angels of Anaheim. And yet, in matters of style, he has the Channing Tatum–y, farm-boy appeal of flyover territory. The 2012 Rookie of the Year is shown here in all-American red gingham and is compared frequently to another small-town giant: Oklahoma’s Mickey Mantle.
