Anton Ego, the curmudgeonly food reviewer in Ratatouille, notably says, "In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read."
But what purpose does it serve to call a book trash, especially when the future of publishing and literature is uncertain?
Pulitzer-winning reviewer Michael Dirda, who has been called "the most well-read man in America" said in an Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit that he enjoys encouraging the artists of an era, even if doing so requires a little tough love. He also described Amazon comments as "exceptionally shrewd and insightful."
He may be right, but we're sure he wasn't talking about these Amazon comments, which are possibly the dumbest book reviews of all time:
