WASHINGTON (AP) -- D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty has cast his ballot in a heated Democratic primary race for his position.
A communications director for Fenty's campaign says the mayor voted at Sharpe Health School on 13th Street in northwest Washington about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Voters are choosing candidates for a host of offices, but the most contested race is for mayor where Fenty is trying to fend off a challenge from D.C. Council chairman Vincent Gray. The winner of the Democratic primary will likely become mayor since there is no Republican challenger in the race.
Many voters have already cast their ballots during early voting. Election officials say that more than 22,000 people had voted as of Sunday.
On Tuesday, polls opened at 7 a.m. They will remain open until 8 p.m.
