Dunkin' Donuts' New Menu Features Dark Hot Chocolate, French Toast Bagels

Dunkin' Donuts Announces New Menu Items

The words "diet" and "fitness" are Googled most frequently in January, which could mean bad news for restaurants specializing in sweet, caloric treats. This could explain the surge of fast food chains announcing new menu items this month.

Among the new items is a Dark Hot Chocolate, which a press release from Dunkin' Donuts describes as "rich" and "indulgent." A French Toast Bagel will also be available, featuring "the delicious flavors of cinnamon, egg, vanilla and butter with an authentic crust and a soft, chewy inside." Both will be available at participating restaurants nationwide for a limited time.

While these items seem to be a simple fusion of new flavors and existing products, Dunkin' also has some slightly more innovative revamps in the works. Last week, it announced testing for a gluten-free treat, allowing it to join the ranks of fast food chains that have tweaked their menus to meet the needs of those with Celiac Disease. In October, it announced the release of "Bagel Bunchkins," or ball-shaped, bite-sized bagels à la donut holes.

Where to get them: SingaporeWhat it is: No official word on what exactly these creations are, but we imagine they're pretty self-explanatory. Wasabi paste or dried seaweed and cheese on a doughnut? Hmm...We imagine: Philadelphia sushi rolls (with cream cheese) are relatively popular in America, although not very traditional. Perhaps that’s the appeal? Where to get them: TexasWhat it is: Obviously this doughnut isn’t technically from abroad, but we figured we might as well toss in one strange, regional menu item. In Texas, Dunkin’ Donuts serves kolaches, a treat often found in Czech bakeries. A typical kolache is a soft, sweet, yeasty roll filled with apricots, prunes, cheese, poppy seeds, or sausage. The Dunkin’ version uses a cheesy smoked sausage link, which may not be weird, but doesn’t usually come in a doughnut. Fill it with apricots and we’ve got another story. We imagine: A slightly sweet hot dog wrapped in a super soft bun. Slideshow: 15 Hot Dogs from Around the WorldPhoto Credit: © Dunkin' Donuts
