Jane Lynch's estranged wife, Dr. Lara Embry, is requesting that the actress to pay her attorney's fees and spousal support, according to People magazine.

Lynch and Embry married in June 2010 at a small ceremony in Massachusetts. And although the union didn't work out, Lynch told Larry King that the two will remain friends.

"It's two people who decided it's better to go apart than stay together," she told King.

Lynch and Embry's divorce announcement shocked fans, many of whom took to Twitter to express their disappointment about the split. But theirs isn't the only surprising divorce; click through the slideshow below for other shocking celebrity splits.

High-profile Hollywood couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes called it quits in June 2012 after five years of marriage. Their sudden split surprised many -- including Cruise himself who was reportedly "blindsided" by Holmes' filing. The former couple finalized the divorce less than two months later in August 2012. Heidi Klum and Seal shocked us when the seemingly perfect couple announced their separation in January 2012, after nearly seven years of marriage. It seems that their yearly tradition of renewing their vows on their anniversary did little to strengthen their union; Klum officially filed for divorce in April 2012. The "Project Runway" host has since been dating bodyguard Martin Kristen. Their relationship fueled Seal's now-infamous rant to TMZ in which he said he wished that Klum had waited until they were separated before deciding to "fornicate with the help." His publicist later clarified that he did not mean to imply that she had been unfaithful -- rather, because the divorce has not been finalized, the couple is still legally married. Will Arnett and Amy Poehler(03 of09)

In September 2012, Will Arnett and Amy Poehler announced their separation after nine years of marriage. Their sudden split left many fans of the comedic duo absolutely crushed. One such fan is "Office" actress Mindy Kaling, who devoted a passage in her 2011 book of essays to why she "really admired" Arnett and Poehler's relationship. "I remember at the 'Parks and Recreation' premiere four years ago, Amy was looking for her husband toward the end of the night," Kaling wrote. "She stopped by me and a couple other 'Office' writers who had scammed invites to the party. She said, 'Hey guys. Have you seen Arnett? I can't find him.' We didn't know where he was, and she shook her head good-naturedly, like, 'That guy,' and went on looking for him. I had never heard a woman call her husband by his last name, like she was a player on the same sports team Will was on. You could tell from that small moment that Will and Amy are total pals." Many thought that funny couple Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito were in it for the long haul after being married for decades. Sadly, they were wrong. In October 2012, the now-estranged couple of 30 years announced their separation. Many stars were stunned by the breakup. "Girls" actress Lena Dunham tweeted, "I'm taking DeVito/Perlman harder than I would my own parents. Feel like they were waiting for me to graduate college and move out to do this." The good news for Dunham? In March 2013, it was reported that DeVito and Perlman were attempting to reconcile. (credit:Getty Images)

News of Chad Johnson's divorce from "Basketball Wives" star Evelyn Lozada after just 41 days of marriage wasn't necessarily a shock in and of itself. What was shocking were the circumstances that led to their split: Johnson reportedly head-butted his then-wife just weeks after marriage. The wide receiver was arrested after the incident and his contract with the Miami Dolphins was swiftly terminated. The ex-couple finalized their divorce in September 2012. (credit:AP)
Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli (06 of09)

Peter Facinelli filed for divorce from Jennie Garth in March 2012 after 11 years of marriage. The former couple and their three daughters -- Luca, Lola and Fiona -- seemed like a picture-perfect family, but there were underlying struggles. In an April 2012 People magazine interview, Garth cited "jealousy over having to see [her] husband onscreen with another woman" as a source of marital conflict for the estranged couple. Another contributing factor may have been Facinelli's career, which has taken off since he landed roles in "Twilight" and "Nurse Jackie" over the last few years. "Maybe he's just hitting his stride as an actor and that's interesting to him," Garth speculated. "He deserves to do with that success whatever he wants to do with it. (credit:Getty Images)

In November 2012, NASCAR driver Danica Patrick surprised the racing world when she took to her Facebook page to announce her divorce from husband Paul Hospenthal. "I am sad to inform my fans that after seven years, Paul and I have decided to amicably end our marriage," Patrick wrote. "This isn't easy for either of us, but mutually it has come to this. He has been an important person and friend in my life and that's how we will remain moving forward." Hospenthal -- who is 17 years older than his estranged wife -- is a physical therapist who met Patrick when he was treating her for a non-racing-related injury. (credit:Getty Images)

"Big Bang Theory" actress Mayim Bialik announced her divorce from her husband of nine years, Michael Stone, on her parenting blog in November 2012. Bialik, who is an advocate of attachment parenting, shot down rumors that the unconventional parenting philosophy played a part in the split. "The hands-on style of parenting we practice played no role in the changes that led to this decision; relationships are complicated no matter what style of parenting you choose," the former "Blossom" star wrote. Bialik and Stone have two young sons together, ages four and seven. (credit:Getty Images)
Katy Perry and Russell Brand(09 of09)

We know that Russell Brand and Katy Perry didn't officially divorce in 2012 (Brand filed papers with the court on Dec. 30, 2011), but most of the speculation about their split didn't begin until after the New Year. In January, reports surfaced that Brand's insatiable sexual appetite may have caused the relationship to fail. He later revealed to Australia's "60 Minutes" that it was actually a lack of compatibility -- not his sex drive -- that led to their split. "Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it don't," Brand told host Liz Hayes. "But if you sort of sense there’s an incompatibility, then in any relationship, regardless of the status of the individual, it kind of is best to go separate ways." (credit:AP)
