Jerry and the Geriatric -- Say What?

Hats off to anyone who finds love, no matter their age or the age of their betrothed. But just wait a New York minute on Jerry Hall's engagement to Rupert Murdoch.

Jerry Hall is 59 years old and Rupert Murdoch is 84 years old. If Jerry was a single mother of four who worked a few jobs to pay the bills and Rupert was dirt poor, we'd all be scratching our heads and googling "daddy issues." Without some big draw such as money, power or fame, most men in their eighties are not lucky enough to attract a woman in her fifties.

If Jerry was a single mother of four who worked a few jobs to pay the bills and Rupert was either wealthy, powerful or famous, however, we would all think the same thing -- she was marrying him for his money/power/fame. No one would bat an eye. Happens all the time.

Yet Jerry Hall is not poor (we assume). She had a successful career as a model before and during her not-legal marriage to Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. She is famous and attractive and 25 years younger than Rupert Murdoch. So it boggles some minds as to why she would want to marry a man old enough to be her father.

Call me a cynic or call me politically incorrect for bringing up the age difference. But it exists. Anyone who has a relative or friend in their eighties would be suspicious if their friend or relative announced that they were going to marry someone 25 years younger. Most people aren't interested in marrying someone old enough to be their parent.

I'm not saying that Rupert doesn't have a killer sense of humor. He may. I'm not saying that Rupert doesn't have a killer business instinct or facility for wealth accumulation. He definitely does. He may be the loveliest, kindest, sweetest, funniest, smartest man Jerry Hall has ever met but there is a difference between a friend and a fiancée. One you spend time with because you enjoy spending time with them and the other you share a bed with (and possibly a pre-nup). Just sayin'.

Jerry Hall is Rupert Murdoch's 4th fiancée and she is 25 years younger than Rupert and two years older than Rupert's oldest child, Prudence. Best of luck to both of them. I don't understand it but if it works for them, so be it.

I won't be checking my mailbox hourly for my wedding invitation.
