Here is the bad news: You're probably never going to own a private island like Richard Branson or Johnny Depp. This is not your fault. This is just how the math works out. Fortunately, there are a number of fantastic and lesser known island resorts around the world that were built for the sole purpose of allowing you to pretend that you own a private island. The best of these, the world's most relaxing island retreats, are generally a hop off the beaten path and a world away from hectic, modern, day-to-day life. A reservation at these resorts is a ticket out of the ordinary.

Unfortunately, booking an island retreat can be a risky game. If you don't love the accommodations or the scenery, there is little to be done. In truth, there are also a lot of disappointing resorts out there that offer either luxury without much natural context or scenery accompanied by poor to middling services.

These five retreats absolutely will not disappoint. Though they couldn't be much further apart, they share a single common characteristic: They are all thoughtful designed and laid out. These resorts don't allow travelers to de-stress by creating an environment of faux luxury, but by giving them beach access and beautiful views then getting out of the way.

Set on Havelock, the most beautiful of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Munjoh offers travelers a respite from pretty much everything. Visitors can take advantage of the wide beach, opportunities to swim with Asian Elephants, great SCUBA diving or lounge about in the simple cabanas. Travelers do have to earn the isle's intimacy, flying into Port Blair from Delhi and ferrying out to the island oasis. Though it doesn't sit directly on Fernando de Noronha's incredibly scenic beaches, Maravilha has commanding views of Brazil's island paradise and great pools for soaking. The hotel offers bungalows and apartment-style rooms, all with a clean colonial finish. There is also great seafood to be had, though it might just be a distraction from the beach. The northernmost hotel set on the islands of the Great Barrier Reef is also the region's most relaxing resort. Lizard Island, the land mass that is, is a park fringed by empty, picturesque beaches and visitors can roam these idyllic environs unharassed. They can also head back toward their private villas to book SCUBA expeditions, helicopter tours and spa treatments. (credit:Alamy)
Cayo Espanto, Belize(04 of05)

A tiny islet off Belize's Caribbean coast, Cayo Espanto has South Pacific-style overwater bungalows a distinctly local laid back atmosphere. The luxurious rooms have windows in the floor so visitors can watch the ubiquitous marine life and are understandably popular with honeymooners. The island is notable not only because of its beauty, but because the trip from the U.S. is neither long nor stressful. Paradise sits within arm's reach. (credit:Alamy)
Matemo, Mozambique(05 of05)

Set in the Quirimbas archipelago off the coast of Mozambique, the up and coming African destination, Matemo offers the amenities on tap in more frequented spots and the florid strangeness of Africa. The local cooking is extraordinary, as is the friendliness of the islanders, for whom tourism is becoming a mainstay. Divers will also have the chance to explore an underwater ecosystem as well preserved as the groves on shore. (credit:Alamy)
