A woman was arrested after threatening South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley ahead of an event at an elementary school Tuesday.
WSPA-TV reports Jennifer Phillips, a parent volunteer with the Santa's Workshop program at Liberty Elementary School, said "I'm going to smuggle a gun in and kill this Governor" to a school employee. The remark was made prior to the event, and Phillips was removed from the building before Haley arrived.
After speaking at the elementary school, Haley brushed off the threat to reporters.
"When you make decisions, you make some people happy and you make some people upset," Haley said. "There are some people who take it a little bit further, and that is part of my job is to deal with it."
Haley has recently faced several major difficulties as governor, including low approval ratings and a massive cyber-attack that stole the Social Security and bank account information of millions of South Carolina residents. Haley ultimately took blame for the security breach, saying she "should have asked the extra question" about ensuring the data’s security.
