It's that magical time of year in the Northeast -- that stretch of still-warm weather after the summer weekenders head home and before the hoards of leaf-peepers hit the road. And rather than mourn the loss of bonfires on the beach and days spent wearing swimsuits, we're celebrating shoulder season, that in-between time that's perfect for a visit to coastal Maine, Rhode Island or New York. To make sure not a weekend goes to waste, Jetsetter put together an easy guide to shoulder season. Once a private club with an A-list membership that included the Vanderbilts, today the Montauk Yacht Club is a family-friendly beach escape at the tip of Long Island. The resort dates back to 1928, when Carl Fisher -- the man who transformed Miami from sleepy town to glitzy Deco star -- set his sights on the New York area.Last call: Explore the landmark Montauk Point Lighthouse. Completed in 1796, it's the fourth-oldest active lighthouse in the U.S and it's light can be seen up to 19 nautical miles out at sea. Back at the Yacht Club, head to the Turtle Lounge, a bar/restaurant inside a 1920s replica of the lauded landmark.
