Choosing your wedding cake seems like a wedding planning task that would be easy, but it can be more difficult than choosing your wedding gown! Before you can even start thinking about the flavors, you have to choose the look you want. And...what look do you want? There are so many to choose from, and you may not know much about all of your options. Here are some types and styles of cake you may want to familiarize yourself with before you start choosing your wedding dessert.

Incredible Cakes
Buttercream(01 of05)

Creamy, dreamy buttercream frosting has a sweet, buttery flavor that guests love. "Snow white buttercream" is a pure white variation that is often used for wedding cakes (it works well for both white and colorful cakes). Buttercream frosting can also be used as filling between the layers of a tiered cake. It's light and fluffy, so you can easily slice through it during the cake-cutting at your reception.Photo by: Trent Bailey on Wedding Chicks via Lover.ly (credit:Trent Bailey)
Fondant(02 of05)

Fondant comes in two variations (rolled and poured) but rolled fondant is most common for wedding cakes. It's rolled out into a sheet and then applied to the cake, where it has a super-smooth finish that stays semi-soft. If you want a porcelain finish, or a design straight out of "Cake Boss," fondant is the frosting for you.Photo by: Fiona Kelly Photography on Reverie Magazine via Lover.ly (credit:Fiona Kelly Photography)
Royal Icing, Marzipan, and Gum Paste(03 of05)

Want sculpted flowers, bows, or latticework on your cake? Royal icing, marzipan and gum paste are all used to create such a look. Royal icing is very sweet and dries hard; your baker may use royal icing if you want a deep, vibrant color. Marzipan is made from almond paste and is often used to create fake fruits; it can also be rolled out and used as icing. And gum paste is made from gelatin and gum paste decorations will actually last for years. Photo by: Cory McCune Photography on Wedding Chicks via Lover.ly (credit:Cory McCune Photography)
Swiss Dot(04 of05)

Swiss dot is a patten that can appear on fondant or buttercream cakes. We love the sweet retro vibe you get with this pattern and as vintage weddings become more popular, we predict more couples will be choosing Swiss dot cakes in 2013. Groom's Cake(05 of05)

While we hope that the groom has a big say in the wedding cake (or that you'd get yourself an iPad cake if you wanted one!), we're not going to protest the idea of having two desserts! The groom's cake is typically smaller and a bit more creative than the main cake. Guests are often encouraged to take slices of the groom's cake home as a souvenir, so if you decide to have one, you may want to set out treat bags with the groom's cake.
