Deputy Secretary Of State Negroponte Urges Pakistan To End Emergency Rule

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf must lift the state of emergency he declared this month and release all political detainees, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said.

Negroponte yesterday met with Musharraf to urge the military chief to restore the constitution before holding general elections in the next two months. Opposition parties led by former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif have said they may boycott the polls unless Musharraf lifts emergency rule.
