(AP) - A South Carolina senator who referred to the front-runner in the Republican race for governor as a "raghead" could be reprimanded by county GOP leaders and asked to resign.

The executive committee of the Lexington County Republican Party is scheduled to meet Thursday evening to discuss the comments made by GOP Sen. Jake Knotts.

Knotts referred to fellow Lexington County Rep. Nikki Haley as a "raghead" on an Internet political talk show last Thursday. He quickly apologized, saying the remarks were said in jest.

Executive committee member Joshua Gross will offer for debate a resolution that would censure Knotts, revoke his membership from the county GOP party and ask him to resign. Gross is spokesman for GOP lieutenant governor candidate Bill Connor.

Knotts says he will not resign.
