Of the mayor elect, Carville wrote, "In Landrieu, businesses, congressional leaders, nonprofit organizations and average citizens will finally have a leader and partner in a united city government that promises to restore confidence and get dollars flowing to projects that need them." Carville's wife, Republican strategist Mary Matalin, was active in Landrieu's fund-raising during his run for office and Carville backed the candidate.
The CNN contributor lists what he sees as other signs of recovery including:
- The New Orleans Saints Winning the Super Bowl;
Carville also listed changes still needed in New Orleans including reducing violent crime, repairing blight, rebuilding communities, restoring wetlands and citizen-driven reform of local government "once marked by corruption, nepotism, incompetence and the like."
