Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) has defeated former U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez (R-Colo.) in the state's competitive gubernatorial contest Tuesday.

Hickenlooper ran unopposed in this year's Democratic primary. He was first elected to the governorship in 2010, after having served as mayor of Denver.

Republicans opposed his push to expand background checks for gun purchases as a part of a broader package of gun control reforms.
