A firebrand communications hire may help Texas GOP Senate candidate David Dewhurst beat back a tough runoff challenge from Tea Party favorite Ted Cruz.
Mark Miner, who worked as a high-profile spokesman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry's Republican presidential campaign, will join Dewhurst this week, the Texas Tribune reports. The lieutenant governor and wealthy businessman is facing Cruz, the former solicitor general, in the July 31 runoff election.
The race has become increasingly fraught: Dewhurst was booed last week when he attacked Cruz in a speech at the state party convention, and earlier this month the two faced off over one another's willingness to engage in debates.
Miner has a great deal of campaign experience at both the state and national level. He helped Perry defeat Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) in 2010 and has also served as a spokesman for the Republican National Committee.
