President Barack Obama praised the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the South Carolina Capitol on Friday.

South Carolina lawmakers voted to ban the flag from the Capitol grounds after a shooting at a historic black church that left nine people dead. Gov. Nikki Haley (R-S.C.) signed the bill into law on Thursday.
The flag had flown at a Confederate memorial on the South Carolina Capitol grounds since 2000, when it was removed from its perch atop the statehouse.
