There are few drinks more delicious or satisfying to fix than a classic Whiskey Sour. It has the perfect balance of sweet and tart with enough alcohol to make it enjoyable.

Using the same basic Sour recipe —consisting of roughly two parts alcohol to one part sour and one part sweet—you can create a range of cocktails, including the Daiquiri, the Margarita and the Sidecar. (Add some Champagne to the mix and you can get a French 75, too).

So to help get you started, we pulled together five different variations on the Sour that show you just how versatile the formula is. We guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Before you begin experimenting, master the classic first. Our recipe comes from Liquor.com advisory board member and legendary mixologist Dale DeGroff. You can use any bourbon you like but be sure to squeeze fresh lemon juice; it's the key to this drink.

This South American delight is a staple in both Chile and Peru, and both countries claim pisco as their national spirit. Our recipe comes from Liquor.com advisory board member and master distiller Allen Katz. So, start off with some pisco and add fresh lime juice, simple syrup and an egg white. (Don’t be afraid: The egg white gives the drink its signature rich and creamy texture and is perfectly safe to consume raw.) Just be sure to shake it long and hard to create the proper frothiness.

This twist on the traditional Sour is the ideal sipper for a warm spring afternoon. Mix Knob Creek Bourbon—which is oh-so-smooth—with the sweet ginger liqueur Domaine de Canton and both fresh grapefruit and lemon juices. This just might be your favorite new drink of the season.

Despite its name, this drink created by top New York bartender Eben Freeman is far from unapproachable and includes equal parts bourbon, fresh lemon juice and tart pomegranate liqueur.

1870 Sour(05 of05)

Don’t be fooled by the Mason jar: This is the most complex cocktail on our list and was invented by talented bartender Dominic Venegas. In addition to the standard whiskey (Tennessee's George Dickel this time) and lemon juice, it calls for maple syrup and blueberry jam for sweetness, egg white for texture, and a red-wine float for a unique flavor and beautiful presentation.
