Vintage Travel: South Korea Pictures From The 1960s Show A Different World (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: The Korea That Was
Open Image Modal

Tourists in Seoul invariably find themselves at the top of the N Tower, marveling at the massive expanse of the South Korean capital. The Han River winds its way past the seemingly countless skyscrapers decked out in neon and lined up neatly along boulevards dense with locally manufactured cars. The city wears its modernity on its t-shirt sleeve.

To see Seoul is to think South Korea’s current status in the world was always assured, but this couldn’t be less the case. As recently as a half-century ago, South Korea was something closer to a backwater, a new nation grappling with the aftermath of the Korean war and searching for an identity.

Because this period is so easy to forget, the set of photographs recently posted online by Bill Smothers, who lived in Korea with his family in the late 50s and early 60s, stirred up quite a bit of interest among Koreans. Far from the expanding malls and K-pop fueled clubs, the images show an agrarian country, obviously poor yet naturally striking. This Korea was a place where ex-soldiers settled and adventures wandered off into secret forests –- something along the line of what Vietnam and Cambodia would someday become.

The pictures should serve as excellent inspiration for travelers considering whether or not they might be willing to try traveling in the developing world. The developing world, it seems, has a tendency to develop.

Photograph of Taegu City (aka Daegu) taken in late 1959 from a local reservoir by my father, Leroy Smothers. Korean lady and child , circa 1960. Women in stream below are washing clothes. The location is now called Kuneadan, near the US 8th Army Main Post in Yongsan, south of Seoul City and just below Namsan mountain. Ridge in the left background is the east side of the US Army Rifle Firing Range. Part of the lower slope of Namsan mountain can be seen in the background at upper right. Town on the hill in the background is Haebangchon. The steepled building is Haebang Presbyterian Church (www.haebang.or.kr) built in 1959 and still standing in 2007. Korean street market in 1960, probably near or in Seoul. The exact location has not been positively identified yet. The photographer, my father Leroy Smothers, did not label the 35 mm slide this image was scanned from. He traveled all over South Korea, so this could be somewhere other than Seoul. This 1960 photo of a street merry-go-round was taken somewhere in South Korea by my father, Leroy Smothers. He traveled so much that I cannot say with certainty what city this is in. It looks like there are a two military vehicles (jeeps) to the far right, so perhaps this is in Yongsan or Itaewon near the US 8th Army Compound? Note the barber shop to the left and across the street....the barber shop sign is partly written in English, suggesting they are hoping for some foreign customers! Aerial View of Han River(11 of15)
Open Image Modal
This photo was taken in 1960 from an airplane by my father, Leroy Smothers, probably during one of his trips between Korea & Japan. It shows a portion of the Han River near Seoul, which is off-picture somewhere. I have not found any identifying landmarks in this photo, so the exact location is uncertain. This might be where present day Sungsu Bridge and Dongho Bridges are located - if so, Seoul is off-picture at the top.The Han River near Seoul has changed quite a lot since this 1960 photo was taken - the huge sandbars are mostly gone, the open land is now filled with buildings, and there are many bridges that did not exist in 1960. If you think you know where on the Han this is, please leave a comment or note.Image Source: 35 mm Slide labeled "Seoul - 1960" by Leroy Smothers (credit:Leroy Smothers)
