Starbucks Is Finally Adding Almond Milk To Its Menu

Things are about to get nutty at Starbucks.

The coffee chain announced today that it is finally adding almond milk to its menu, starting Sept. 6. 

The change is huge for vegan and lactose-intolerant coffee drinkers, adding one more dairy-free option alongside coconut and soy milk. And even a cow’s milk fan can swoon at the thought of a toasty, warm latte made with almond milk. Mmm. 

While almond milk may sound like a naturally superior alternative to cow’s milk, it isn’t necessarily the healthier choice for everyone. Experts point out that while almond milk is usually lower in saturated fat than cow’s milk and has no cholesterol, cow’s milk contains far more protein. What’s more, sweetened commercial almond milks often come with added sugar, which is bad news no matter how you slice it.

Starbucks will be selling its own blend of almond milk that does contain added sugar, a spokesperson told HuffPost. However, it won’t necessarily ruin your diet: A grande-sized cup of Starbucks almond milk will have six grams of sugar, which can easily fit into a diet that stays below the federally recommended limit of 50 grams of added sugar per day. 

All things considered, almond milk is far from the worst choice you can make at a coffeeshop. Therefore, we’re ready to “milk” the benefits of this menu change. Cheers to almond milk!
