HotelTonight, Travel App, Makes Hurricane Sandy Relief Donation

Travel App Moves To Help Sandy Victims

After Superstorm Sandy barreled through the Northeast, one travel app was particularly well suited to offer relief to victims.

HotelTonight, a still-new mobile hotel booking app based in San Francisco, typically offers spontaneous hotel bookings. But in the wake of the storm, that idea went from fun to critically important for those living without power, heat or even roofs over their heads.

Instead of cashing in on the scramble for the limited availability at New York hotels -- a cut-throat game even without a disaster -- HotelTonight lined up more than 25 hotels that could donate rooms, more than 130 in all.

The app company then donated all of its proceeds between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 -- $60,000 total -- to the Red Cross.

Google also stepped up in the wake of the disaster with storm relief efforts. More than $92 million has been raised for Sandy relief so far, according to a November 6 report.
