Packing for fashion month is an art: It requires discipline to fit all your necessities in one suitcase as well as the creativity to pack for all conceivable weather conditions and occasions. Finding a balance between chicness and practicality can be tricky, but our editors are seasoned pros. First up are New York Fashion Week essentials for Vogue Contributing Editor Lawren Howell, who travels cross-country from Los Angeles for the shows. Her list is inspiring for any stylish marathon week; she includes the perfect combination of trusty staples (like her favorite Le Labo perfume and Chanel mascara) and fashion statements (like running shoes for day and a new as-yet-unworn Crippen suit). Click through to see Howell's must-haves for attending the shows in New York.

I always pack a couple pairs of NewbarKs in my bag for the plane because I'm really a flats girl at heart and need relief from uncomfortable heels! Chanel mascara is very lightweight and lasts all day, perfect for long days. And I always bring my favorite sleeveless trench. It's a season old, but September in New York is really the perfect time of year for it-it's very light and is there when you need it for those surprise showers. I'm packing my new FuelBand so I can see how many miles I cover in a day. It will keep me from feeling bad when I don't have time to officially work out. I'm also taking two Klean Kanteens to stay hydrated and because I can't stand seeing all those water bottles being thrown away at the tents! My Golden Goose running shoes are a staple-I think I can get away with wearing them with cropped trousers and a nice short-sleeve knit during Fashion Week now that running shoes are officially on trend. I purchased an extra-large green-and-white striped bag for fall from Chloé with a big exterior pocket with Fashion Week in mind. It'll hold everything-including my Klean Kanteen! My flax linen pantsuit is from Crippen. I just got it and have yet to wear it because a full suit still feels very grown-up for me! But it'll make its debut at Fashion Week. REFRESH(05 of05)

My travel-size Le Labo scent is a mainstay in my purse. I've been wearing their Santal 33 scent for years, and it never fails to get noticed. The Chanel Vitalumière Aqua compact is a product my friend L.A. makeup artist Geoffrey Rodriguez told me about and I love it. The compact is water-based and is a really great skin refresher throughout the day.
