Salmonella Fears Prompt Recall Of Certain Chia Powder-Containing Products

Several products containing chia powder are being recalled due to potential contamination with salmonella, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The products include:

- Navitas Naturals Organic Sprouted Chia Powder (affected UPC codes/dates)
- Navitas Naturals Omega Blend Sprouted Smoothie Mix (affected UPC codes/dates)
- Williams-Sonoma Omega 3 Smoothie Mixer (affected UPC codes/dates)
- Green Smoothie Girl Sprouted Ground TriOmega Superfood (silver pouch) (affected UPC codes/dates)
- Green Smoothie Girl Sprouted Ground TriOmega Superfood (gold pouch) (affected UPC codes/dates)
- Organic Traditions Sprouted Chia Seed Powder (affected UPC codes/dates)
- Organic Traditions Sprouted Chia and Flax Seed Powder (affected UPC codes/dates)

There have so far been 21 infections from Salmonella in 12 states linked to these products. Signs of salmonella infection include experiencing diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever in the 12 to 72 hours after being infected. While most people will feel sick for four to seven days and then recover on their own without treatment, there are certain people for whom salmonella infection can be especially dangerous, particularly young children (under the age of 5), older adults and people who are immunocompromised.

The products were sold at various retail locations nationwide. The CDC noted that because these products have a long shelf life, people should check their cabinets to see if they should throw the products away.
