Award-winning artist and journalist Molly Crabapple said Friday that one of the biggest misconceptions regarding the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay was that “it’s just like an American prison.”

Crabapple, who has documented her tour of the Guantanamo Bay facility in various works of art, shared with HuffPost Live the conditions in which she witnessed detainees being handled.

“In Guantanamo Bay, detainees are cut off from the outside world. They only are able to speak to their families four times a year,” Crabapple said. “Even things that you might think would be a luxury like watching TV are done while the detainee is shackled to the floor.”
