Psychologists Jeff Gardere and Peggy Norwood joined HuffPost Live hosts Marc Lamont Hill and Abby Huntsman to discuss how those affected by Friday's deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Friday morning can begin coping with the tragedy. Gardere said that parents of children at the school need to use each other for support.

"The most important thing -- parents need to use one another as a support -- informal support group and share these emotions instead of sitting on them," Gardere told HuffPost Live. "But I think when it comes to even speaking with their kids, it's not about giving a lecture, but finding out where the kids are themselves ..."

Norwood added that parents of children affected by the tragedy need to be patient and reassuring to their kids.

"Here in Colorado, we're a very resilient community -- and just having -- just on the heels of the Aurora theater shooting, people are still healing," Norwood said. "There's always the possibility of a delayed experience of the trauma -- that you may have been fine initially, but over time those symptoms could appear."
