Rick Sacra, Missionary Doctor With Ebola, To Receive Treatment At Nebraska Medical Center

Missionary Doctor With Ebola To Receive Treatment In Nebraska

Rick Sacra, the U.S. missionary doctor who was confirmed to be infected with the Ebola virus earlier this week, will be flown to The Nebraska Medical Center for treatment, according to the mission organization SIM.

Sacra, 51, of Boston, is expected to arrive at the hospital in Omaha on Friday morning. Sacra will receive treatment in the Biocontainment Patient Care Unit.

“Rick was receiving excellent care from our SIM/ELWA staff in Liberia at our Ebola 2 Care Center," Bruce Johnson, president of SIM USA, said in a statement. "They all love and admire him deeply. However, The Nebraska Medical Center provides advanced monitoring equipment and wider availability of treatment options."

Sacra had not been working with Ebola patients while in Liberia, where he was infected with the virus, but instead working in obstetrics. SIM previously said that it was not yet known how he contracted Ebola.

Two other U.S. aid workers, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, were also infected with Ebola while working in Liberia and were flown back to the United States to receive treatment at Emory University Hospital. They have both since recovered from the infection.
