Is the 'Smoketel' the Strangest Travel Idea Yet?

Poor cigarette smokers. As nonsmoking spaces become the norm in the U.S. and around the world, it must be hard for them to find hotel rooms where they're allowed to light up. At least, we think that must be the case since we just received a press release for the new hotel booking site Smoketels.com. The site is an online reservation service -- founded by a smoker, naturally -- that finds smoking rooms in more than 100,000 properties worldwide. We're told it alleviates the hassle of first having to book a hotel and only then find out if there's a smoking room available.

The service offers other perks too. In addition to the joy of scoring a hotel-logo ashtray, users will be happy to find that the Smokehotels service does not charge a booking fee, and there are no cancellation fees if you scrap or change your reservation. Also interesting: the timing of Smoketels' arrival. In light of the recent legalization of pot in Colorado and Uruguay, and the possible spread of that trend to California, Washington, D.C., and other destinations, this service could soon have an additional user base. We wonder if the site would consider adding "stocked mini bar" to its search function.
