Any self-respecting cocktail lover should always have a few items on hand: a shaker, a muddler, a juicer and some big ice cubes. And, especially in the summer, a bag of ripe limes.

Unlike its citrus siblings lemon and orange, lime brings a balance of sweet and sour to a drink. And that's why it's an essential part of tropical classics like the Daiquiri and Margarita.

Grapefruit soda is wonderfully refreshing, and this rum-based drink is the perfect sipper on a hot day. The lime juice adds a bright, piquant note. Even if you can't pull off the elegant lime-peel garnish (all it really takes is a sharp peeler and some patience), your guests will love it.View recipe: Pink Flamingo

Time to run out and buy a bottle of pisco. The two most famous cocktails calling for the summer-friendly South American grape brandy -- the Pisco Sour and Pisco Punch -- both call for lime juice, as does this concoction. It's best with an extra-spicy ginger ale.View recipe: Chilcano
